Polar bear Frimas gave birth Monday, Nov. 26, in the indoor enclosure. The first cub was born at 7:15 pm. The second cub followed a little later, at 7:57 p.m. Both mother and cubs are doing well! The father of the cubs is polar bear Henk. He and Frimas gave birth to polar bear twins twice before in Eindhoven Zoo: Noordje & Pixel and Pixel.Nicky & Simone.

The sex of the two young polar bears is not yet known. This will not be known for several months. For the next few months, the cubs will also remain indoors and no zookeeper will be involved. If all goes well, the two cubs will be able to go outside in the spring of 2019. Fortunately, there are beautiful images of the birth!

Hibernation

What many people do not know is that a female polar bear only goes into hibernation/winter rest when she is pregnant. So Frimas had been staying in a separate indoor enclosure for a while for her "hibernation," although in this case it was more like hibernation because there is no need for polar bears in zoos to actually go to sleep to conserve energy. After all, there is plenty of food available.
