Griffon vulture Stanislav from Eindhoven Zoo arrived in Bulgaria
Vulture Stanislav has arrived safely in Bulgaria. The bird of prey from Eindhoven Zoo left Monday, Feb. 8, for his new home, the Green Balkans sanctuary. The Mierlo Zoo is working with this organization to reintroduce Stanislav to the wild.
At the shelter, Stanislav was medically checked by the veterinarians and among other things, was given tags on his wings so Green Balkans can track him properly. The griffon vulture will now go through a period of habituation at the shelter. Here, along with other vultures, he will learn, among other things, how to start feeding in the nature reserve. In a while, the raptor will be released into Sinite kamani Nature Park.
ReintroductionThe griffon vulture was almost extinct in Bulgaria. One of the causes of this was the laying down of poisoned carcasses by farmers, who did so to scare away bears and wolves. As a result, the populations of the griffon vulture, bearded vulture and monk vulture were significantly reduced.
Nature organization Green Balkans is committed to fighting the extinction of vultures. Thanks in part to their efforts, conditions in Bulgaria have greatly improved in recent years, allowing vultures to safely fly around here again.
To restore the population of griffon vultures, young birds from European zoos are being released into Sinite kamani, among other things. Stanislav is one of them.
