Rhinos celebrate 1-year anniversary stay at Eindhoven Zoo with vegetable cake

Cake for the rhinos in Eindhoven Zoo! Exactly one year ago three Indian rhinos arrived in Eindhoven Zoo and entered the new enclosure. That is of course a great reason for a party.

The three rhinos received a vegetable cake this weekend to celebrate this milestone. Over the past year, the three Indian rhinos ate a bit off. In total, they ate over 41,000 pounds of feed and also produced about that same amount of manure. That amounts to the weight of about nineteen rhinos!

Eindhoven Zoo currently houses three Indian rhinos: two females and one male. The two females, Narayani and Jhansi, are from Tiergarten Berlin and will return to Berlin in October 2021. By that time, another female will probably come to Eindhoven Zoo, so that a pair can be formed with male Gainda, who comes from ZooParc de Beauval. The rhinos share the renovated enclosure with three other species: hippopotamus, swine deer and Visaya warthogs. The Indian rhino is critically endangered. At the beginning of the 20th century, this species was almost extinct, there were less than 200 Indian rhinos still living in the wild.

Lottery

Meanwhile, partly due to good protection, there are nearly 3,000 in the wild. As part of the one-year anniversary of the renovated enclosure, Eindhoven Zoo is organizing a special lottery. When you leave a sum of money and your name, you have a chance to get a look behind the scenes. The amount raised will ultimately go to Stichting Wildlife. This foundation is committed to various conservation projects, including the protection of rhinos.
