Eindhoven Zoo welcomes Netherlands' only red-backed pelican chick
A red-backed pelican has hatched at Eindhoven Zoo. The chick is the only hatchling to be born in a Dutch zoo in the past 12 months. The sex is not yet known.
The red-backed pelican is found in the wild in large parts of sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar and parts of Yemen and Oman. There, this bird species breeds in swamps and shallow lakes. As its name suggests, the red-backed pelican has a pinkish-red back, combined with gray and white feathers. In a while, the chick will also take on these colors.
