Lynx born in Eindhoven Zoo, hooray!

A lynx has been born in Eindhoven Zoo! Mother Anne and her cub are doing well. Animal keepers were able to see the little one up close for the first time yesterday and saw that it is a female.

The newborn lynx has not yet been given a name. Suggestions for a nice name are most welcome and can be submitted on Eindhoven Zoo's Facebook page.

Lynx family

Eindhoven Zoo is now home to four lynxes that make up a family. Mother Anne, father Bob,their little Spinner who just turned one year old and the newborn cub. Mother Anne raises her daughters on her own, which is common among lynxes. The suckling period lasts about two to five months and during this time the cub still remains in mother's safe nest. In total, the mother takes care of the cub for about 12 months before it can stand completely on its own two feet.

Habitat

Lynx live and hunt alone in nature. In their habitat in Europe, lynx are found together withthe wolf andbrown bear the largest predators. Despite not being much bigger than a sheepdog themselves, they hunt not only small prey such as hares and birds, but also deer and larger deer species. When they have caught such large prey, they can sometimes return to the prey as many as 6 times to be able to eat the whole animal. But they prefer to make things easy for themselves: they often choose prey that is unattentive or weakened.
