Eindhoven Zoo has said goodbye to collared bears

Eindhoven Zoo has had to say goodbye to two iconic residents. Collared bears Morritz and Frederike passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 22. The pair, who had lived at the zoo in Mierlo for thirteen years, had been suffering from health problems for some time.

In 2008, the animals moved to Eindhoven Zoo from a zoo in Lisbon. Because of their residence at the beginning of the walking trail, they were among the first animals visitors encountered. "Morritz in particular spent many hours at the window of his enclosure and then enjoyed attracting the attention of the attendees." let head zookeeper Stephan Rijnen know.

"For fourteen years they were the gatekeepers of our park. A lot of visitors enjoyed them," Rijnen says. "But they were old and had been struggling with health problems for a long time. We therefore had to make the difficult decision, in consultation with the veterinarians, to put them to sleep." With the death of Morritz and Frederike, this species no longer lives in Eindhoven Zoo.
