Birth wave in Eindhoven Zoo Mierlo: many young animals born
In Eindhoven Zoo Mierlo so far, fifteen young animals have been born to four different animal species. Nine polar foxes have been born, three ibexes, one Parmawallaby and one reindeer. The young animals are doing well.
Among the arctic foxes, nine young were counted, which seems like a lot but is average for this species. A litter can consist of as many as eighteen young. In a week the young animals will be three weeks old and they will be checked by the veterinarian and also then more will become clear about the gender. From then on, there is a chance that the young foxes will take their first steps outside the nest.
In the enclosure at the Humboldt penguins, one chick has hatched. It is the first egg hatched this year. Currently, several pairs are still incubating.
In the case of the parma wallabies, a young has emerged from the pouch. A wallaby is born after a gestation period of only five weeks. During birth, the mother sits quietly and then the little one crawls to the pouch, where it remains for up to six months.
One reindeer and three ibexes were also born in a one-week period. The three ibex are from two different mothers. Both the reindeer and the young ibex are females.
