Eindhoven Zoo prepares for release of griffon vulture

Eindhoven Zoo can start preparing for the release of griffon vulture Stanislav. All papers for the departure of the bird of prey have been completed and the vulture will soon leave for Bulgaria. There the griffon vulture will eventually be released to contribute to the conservation of the population of European vultures in the southeastern European country.

Stanislav was born in March at the zoo near Eindhoven and is now old enough to stand on his own two feet. The griffon vulture will do so in Bulgaria, where he will be released by Green Balkans. Eindhoven Zoo has cooperated with this organization before and previously released two griffon vultures in Bulgaria.

Extinction
The vulture species griffon vulture, bearded vulture and monk vulture are almost extinct in Bulgaria. Among other things, they became victims of poisoned carcasses, which farmers laid down to chase away bears and wolves. As a result, the population of the three European vulture species declined significantly since 1970.

Green Balkans has now been working for thirty years to fight vulture extinction. The nature organization does everything possible to maintain and increase the population of the three different species of scavengers. They do this by releasing vultures into their natural habitats, but also by addressing the factors that cause the vultures to die.
