Eindhoven Zoo happily surprised with birth of chimpanzee!
After a gestation period of more than seven months, chimpanzee Christa gave birth to a young last night.
Mother and her little one are doing well, but the first period always remains exciting because the cub has to start suckling with the mother. The sex of the newborn chimpanzee is still unknown. In Eindhoven Zoo's newest enclosure, Christa and her cub live together in a group with three female and two male chimpanzees.
Endangered species
Eindhoven Zoo is very happy with this important birth. Due to the disappearance of their habitat and poaching, the distribution of the chimpanzee is greatly diminished and because of this, the chimpanzee is unfortunately an endangered species. Eindhoven Zoo is committed to chimpanzee species conservation with the help of Stichting Wildlife which supports the Jane Goodall Institute. This institute protects chimpanzees and other great apes by, among other things, taking in chimpanzees, deploying anti-poaching units, training rangers, providing public information and education for local communities about protecting endangered wildlife, and community projects for sustainable agriculture.
