History

Eindhoven Zoo is located on the Gulbergen Estate. Part of Gulbergen has long been used as a landfill by RAZOB (now part of Essent), the local waste disposal company. Now that the landfill has been completed, it has been determined in consultation with the surrounding municipalities (united in the Samenwerkingsverband Regio Eindhoven) that Gulbergen has a recreational purpose. A golf course has been built on the old landfill and the hill now forms a striking feature in the landscape.

The estate is largely owned by the Gulbergen Management Company, which is seeking operators to develop parts of the area. After the golf course, the animal park was realized.

The Eindhoven Zoo site was formerly home to an agricultural company. A number of the former barns still have a function in Eindhoven Zoo today. Eindhoven Zoo's land now belongs to Libéma Beheer. Management of the zoo is done by Eindhoven Zoo B.V. within the Day Recreation division of Libéma Exploitatie.

Eindhoven Zoo opened in May 2004.

Dierenrijk started with animal species found in European nature. Hence the name Dierenrijk Europe. Since the arrival of the Siberian tigers in 2007, the park also started focusing on Asian species. Since then, the name of the park was changed to Dierenrijk. In 2024, with a view to the future, the name Dierenrijk was changed to Eindhoven Zoo.

No, Eindhoven Zoo does not receive a subsidy.
