The eggs of the red rat snake are laid in rotting plants. Rotting plants are warm and wet enough for the eggs to hatch. The parents do not care for their young and the mother leaves as soon as she has laid the eggs.
The red rat snake is a strangler and a real muscle snake. As such, it is not venomous, but kills its prey with its strong body. Once it has caught its prey with its sharp teeth, it wraps its body around the prey and squeezes so hard that the prey suffocates.
